How do animals wind up in shelters?

Animals end up in shelters for a variety of reasons, some are abandoned, neglected or abused while others are surrendered by their owners due to circumstances beyond their control or their inability to keep the pet for financial, health or other reasons.

What is the difference between purchasing a pet and adopting a pet?

Purchase: You pay for a pet as though it was a product or item, usually the seller is only interested in unloading the pet and collecting the cash.

Adoption: The pet has usually been examined, given a booster immunization shot, been de-wormed, given a temperament and social evaluation. The people who work in shelters are not interested in making money, just in finding a permanent suitable home for the pet.

Why are there fees involved ?

The adoption fee is two fold, one is to ensure that the adopter is serious and committed, the other is to recover some of the cost incurred for veterinary care, housing, feeding, evaluating and caring for the pets while in the shelter.
