IF YOU HAVE FOUND A PET


  1. Check for a collar and tags
  2. Get a good description and if you can a picture of the pet.  have sex, approx. age, size, breed if you know, any distinguishing markings and the location found and a contact number ready when calling or making a poster
  3. Canvas the area and see if you can locate the owner.
  4. Check online at Infomall and   Petlynx   and your local radio station.
  5. Call local shelters and veterinary clinics
  6. Make posters (petlynx has the ability to do this after you file a found or lost dog report)
  7. If you can not keep the pet while attempting to locate and owner you can call a Peace Officer.

  ONLY FOR ANIMALS WITHIN THE TOWN OF ST. PAUL

 They will be taken to the shelter where they will check for a microchip, search lost reports and attempt to locate their proper home. If not claimed they will be placed up for adoption when ready.

If claiming a pet you will need to come between one and four pm Mon-Sun or call first and make an appointment if outside those hours, stat holiday or if the shelter is closed for any other reason, in emergencies call the Peace Officer. Proof that this is your pet will be required.

You will need to bring the following to pick up your pet

Proof this is your pet, pictures, veterinary records etc as well as:
  • Picture ID
  • If a resident of St. Paul You need to provide your pets License or obtain one from town hall.
  • If not a resident: proof of land location or out of town address.
  • Fees: 65.00 first day and 15.00 each additional day. 
  • (Plus and veterinary or grooming fees incurred if the need was imminent.)
County: County of St. Paul, Call their office at 645-3006 and you will be directed to the county peace officer.
  • The county picks up DOGS only in the county of St. Paul, they are taken to the county facility. The office can provide any additional information. They may euthanize within 72 hrs so it is important to do all you can to locate the pet's owner before having them picked up.
  • If you choose not to use the free county service and wish to take the stray pet to a shelter their will be an intake charge of 100.00 more or less depending on the shelter. Call appropriate shelter first as many are already at capacity.
  • If you have stray cat issues the St. Paul County provides no service for this and you should contact one of the areas shelters (many are also unable to accept cats due to being at capacity.)
