Why do animals end up in shelters?

Animals wind up in shelters for a variety of reasons. Most come here for the following;
  1. The previous owner got the animal on an impulse and did not understand the needs, the breed, the size, the expense, the commitment and/or the responsibility (personally and/or financially) involved.
  2. The previous owner did not want to pay to bring in the animal or figured if they turned it loose it would find a new home or survive on it's own
  3. The previous owner died, was hospitalized, moved to a no pet home or through misfortune can no longer care for their animal.
  4. The animal was abandoned by the previous owner.
Many animals end up in shelters because of irresponsible breeding. People obtain animals to breed thinking they will make money at it. This is a myth. Most breeders have another form of income as the breeding operation is not a profitable one. Breeding animals is a very expensive hobby with little or no return. Most responsible breeders only do it to ensure conformity and continuation of the breed they love.
Those who do it for profit find out rather quickly that there is none, this leads to puppy mills and inhumane cruel breeding operations. The animals are used to create babies, not adequately cared for and disposed of or abandoned once they are no longer a profit.
